Getting started

How do I start?

To start your project you need to sign up to Sproutback and then you just need to click start in our top menu. Just make sure that you’ve read through our guidelines and terms and conditions before starting a project.

Who is eligible to start a project?

To be eligible to start a project you must be over 18 years of age.

What happens after I submit my project for review?

After you submit your project we will try and review it within the next 48 hours. If your project meets all of our guidelines and terms, then we will approve your project. If your project needs a few minor changes or if we have any recommendations, then we will let you know and you can fix it up before submitting your project again. If your project is completely outside our guidelines or if we have any concerns, then we will reject your submission. We will always try and let you know why your project has been rejected.

How long will it take for my project to be reviewed?

We aim to approve projects within 48 hours of their submission. If a project is not ready for approval then this process may take longer.

What are some things I should do before starting my project?

Before starting your project please read through our terms and conditions and have a look at some of the other projects on the site.

How long can my project go for?

The maximum timeframe for running a project is 60 days. Any longer than this and you risk your project ‘dragging out’ at which point it becomes difficult to keep up engagement with backers and potential backers. We recommend 30 days as the ideal timeframe for most projects.

What details should I include in my project description?

Your project should define very clearly what you hope to achieve and how you are going to do it. It’s no good have the best quality video in the world if people are still left scratching their heads afterwards trying to work out what you’re raising money for.

Do I need to have a video for my project?

A video is not required to run a campaign, however, statistically speaking, you are nearly twice as likely to reach your funding goal if you have a video. Videos don’t have to be difficult to make our have a high production budget. Using a camera phone to record your video is completely acceptable and in fact encouraged.

How do the rewards work?

There are some rewards you can’t offer. Check our guidelines for more information.

You can set a limit on rewards.

You don’t have to ship internationally if you can’t or don’t want to.

Can I raise more money than my goal?

Yes you can raise an unlimited amount more than your goal. If you are worried about raising too much and not being able to deliver on rewards, then we recommend putting a limit on your rewards - or you can always contact us for help.

Can I cancel my project if I have to?

If your project is still running, then you can cancel your project and all pledges will immediately be stopped. If you have successfully reached your goal, then you have an obligation to complete your project. As always though, Sproutback is here to help in any way that we can.

Can I edit my project after it has started?

Yes you can edit your project once it is live. There are some parts that you can’t change like the project name, funding goal, project timeframe and any rewards that backers have already selected.

What happens if my project gets really close to being successful but it looks like the time might run out?

In some cases if it looks like a project would reach its goal if it had an extra 12 or 24 hours, then at Sproutback’s discretion we might extend a project for short time. We will contact a project’s creator before extending any time.

I’m worried that a backer is not legitimate, what can I do?

We always recommend clear communication between yourself and backers. If someone pledges a large amount of money then we suggest you get in contact with them early to make sure you feel comfortable they will be able to follow through. If necessary you can always report a backer and we can hide their pledge.

During your project

How do I communicate with backers?

Once you have created a project you will have the ability to contact backers through the edit option on your project.

Can I edit my project?

Before you submit your project you will be able to completely edit your project. Once your project has been approved you will no longer be able to edit the project name, funding goal or duration. You will also not be able to edit any rewards that have already been backed. You can add new rewards and edit rewards that don’t yet have backers.

What happens if I get really close to reaching my target?

In some cases if it looks like a project would reach its goal if it had an extra 12 or 24 hours, then at Sproutback’s discretion we might extend a project for short time. We will contact a project’s creator before extending any time.

After your project ends

If my project is successful, when and how do I get get my funding?

If your project is successful, then we will begin collecting payments from project backers. This process usually takes between 7 - 14 days, and then we transfer the money into your selected bank account. Before transferring the money into your account Sproutback will take out 5% plus any transaction fees.

What happens if I’m unsuccessful?

Your project ends and unfortunately you don’t receive any funding. No money has to be returned as it is only deducted if a project is successful and you don’t have to pay any fees at all.

If my project is unsuccessful can I launch my project again?

You sure can, and theoretically you can apply again straight away. Keep in mind though, that if you didn’t get close the first time and haven’t changed anything, then we might knock back your application. Sometimes an unsuccessful project is just a cheap way to validate that their isn’t an audience for your project, other times it might just mean you need to head back to the drawing board and tweak a couple of things.

What happens if a backer can’t pay?

Once your project is successful we will debit the credit cards of all backers. If a card is declined, we will email the backer to let them know. We will continue to try and collect money from cards at 24hrs and then 72hrs after our first attempt. If a backer cannot pay, you will be alerted and they will be removed from your list of backers.

Will my project stay on Sproutback after it has finished?

All successful projects will remain on Sproutback after they have finished and can be searched and browsed on the site. If a project is unsuccessful it will be removed from the site, this just helps to make things easier if you decide to repost your project later on.

How much are transaction fees?

Transaction fees and are charged at the following rates*:

  • 2.2% of the transaction for Australian cards; and,
  • 3.2% of the transaction for international cards.

*Amex and Diners Club may attract higher rates. There are no transaction fees or any costs for unsuccessful projects.

How do I get backer information?

In the ‘edit’ section of your project you will be able to contact your backers and ask them for any information that you might need, including any sizes or special details.
